Front Porch

Still, I am the child who sits on the stairway,
illogically pausing where life is meant to always pass by

I ponder the brick frame of this
room that is not a room,
neither in, nor out

Here, sun and shadow,
wind and walls
banter and tease

Lines blur between houses,
neighbors take human form

Past and present
mingle in my mind, and
sit down with me

Such a simple thing, to break the seal of the house,
to go somewhere without going anywhere,
to breathe the air and dare to be seen

So just for a bit, I give myself permission to be here.
Content with book, breeze and birds

In the place that is not a place,
for a reason that is not a reason, and
Sip a bit

from a fresh cup of now

  1. Wow! love the idea and the execution..the opening lines just grab the reader and pull them in.

  2. A delightful pause, by the sound of it. I love 'fresh cup of now'. (And 'between' places can be thresholds or portals to other dimensions.)

  3. What a glorious contemplation in idleness in a place which is special for you because it means little to others.

  4. Oh I love the thought of that sip of now... sometimes feeling guilty is the worst part of it.

  5. What a beautiful poem! I really like these quiet thoughts that you expressed so very well. We all need to sit for a while and sip from that time. Your poem is a thoughtful reminder.

Nice to see you at Poets United! We have an open link every Sunday/Monday & a prompt here on Wednesdays. Hope we'll see you here again!

    1. Thanks so much for the warm welcome, and to everyone for the replies. I've recently found my "pen" again and am pleased to find a group like this. It's nice to have friends in our aloneness, and I'm hoping it helps to keep me motivated.

  6. I admire the verse 'Past and present
    mingle in my mind, and
sit down with me' ~ a wonderful skill - to observe, analyze yourself from different perspective....breathing poem!

  7. old and new,
all could be true and cruel,
yet the sun is up and the day is light.

  9. Intriguing juxtapositions throughout this piece create a mood of contemplation that ultimately serves to highlight the simple pleasure to be found in just: drinking in a moment. A thoughtful bit of writing ... beautifully rendered.
